The Smashing Pumpkins - CD Concept - Ava Adore

This CD Concept is a reinterpretation of the Smashing Pumpkins' single "Ava Adore". I wanted to recreate the single design, as the original artwork and packaging doesn't convey they stylistic dark musing succinctly, in my opinion. I choose typefaces that fit the dichotomy of the band at this point - 1 point smoothly commercial and the other part underground punk. The illustration in the center is based off the alchemical properties of want and love. It delves further into the song's subject matter of experiencing a true, unconditional love. At its base, the Pumpkins convey "want" and "love" as being the catalyst for metaphysical transformation - the turn of godhood to humanity, righteousness to sin. Its a divine song about embracing one's own humanity and weakness in the loving embrace of another.

I chose to play on the physical qualities of a green apple. Its shape and color are visual cues that are associated with envy - one of the seven deadly sins that is the least selfishly feeling, one that requires a muse to thrive. I wanted to shape eve's body to take on those qualities, while placing the apple on her neck. The apple replaces her greatest identifier - her face. Its an abstract look at how what we consume shapes our vessels.

Additionally, with all black packaging, I really think this evokes the mood of the Pumpkins for this era - with the tongue-in-cheek reference to "real love" with "x's and o's".
